7 Cardio-Friendly Reminders from Shaun T
I interviewed the brains behind some of the world’s most infamous fitness programs for Mediaplanet's "Heart Health" campaign. It was distributed in print in USA Today and online across Shaun T’s social media profiles.
Shaun Blokker, better known as Shaun T, is a world-renowned health and fitness expert who has transformed the way millions approach their fitness routines. His high-intensity workout programs, like “Insanity,” promise to whip users into shape in just 60 days, while “Focus T25” aims to deliver results with just 25 minutes of exercise a day. Shaun T’s innovative approach has made him a household name in the world of fitness, but his advice goes far beyond just breaking a sweat.
Whether it’s the start of a new year, a birthday, or simply the changing seasons, we often look for opportunities to make a fresh start. If you're aiming to improve your heart health, Shaun T offers some valuable tips to help you get started.
1. Say Yes to Greens
Incorporating leafy greens into your diet, whether through salads or smoothies, provides a host of health benefits.
“I’m not saying you should become a vegetarian,” Shaun T says with a laugh. “But there are so many things you can do with green foods that enhance both your fitness and your heart health.”
Leafy greens are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Fiber is particularly beneficial for weight management as it helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Additionally, fiber moderates blood-sugar levels by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates, which is crucial for overall heart health.
2. Don’t underestimate recovery
Many athletes focus on endurance as the primary measure of their fitness. Shaun T believes that recovery is just as important.
“Everyone is always focused on how long they can run and the endurance they have, but my workouts are about how fast you can recover,” he explains. “If your heart can recover quickly, your day will be full of energy. It’s about training your body, but more importantly, training your heart.”
For those new to fitness, Shaun T recommends starting with “25 to 40 minutes of focused activity every day.” This approach not only builds endurance but also helps improve your heart’s ability to recover.
3. Sweet Potatoes: More Than Just a Side Dish
Sweet potatoes are not only a tasty addition to your diet but also offer significant health benefits. Some studies suggest that they support the immune system and may even help ward off cancer.
“Before a workout, a sweet potato gives you a natural energy boost that can enhance your cardiovascular endurance,” Shaun T notes. “They’re also great post-workout as they are rich in antioxidants and provide nutritionally dense carbohydrates.”
4. AVOID ObsessING Over the Scale
Often, we become fixated on numbers, whether it's our weight or fitness metrics. Shaun T advises against this approach.
“Don’t focus solely on the final number you want to achieve. Instead, celebrate the everyday successes,” he suggests. “It’s what you do each day to be successful that will help you reach your goals in the long run.”
5. UNDERSTAND Expiration Dates
There are many misconceptions about expiration dates on food packages.
“If you’re buying items at the airport, they’ve often been in those packages for a while,” Shaun T explains. “But if you can see the food inside the package, it’s usually been freshly made and will expire sooner.”
It’s important to note that produce loses its nutritional value over time, so consuming it sooner rather than later ensures you get the maximum benefits.
6. STAY PositivE
Maintaining a positive mindset is crucial, even in challenging times. Shaun T emphasizes the importance of focusing on the positive aspects of your journey.
“Negativity is so easy to grasp onto,” he shares. “It’s easy to criticize yourself and focus on what you don’t like. Even in your worst moments, keep thinking positively. Positive thinking helps you achieve positive results.”
7. SET Realistic Goals
Shaun T has recently launched a new online community designed to help users achieve their fitness goals in a realistic and sustainable way.
“You can share your story and interact with others in the community,” he explains. The platform offers workouts, weekly challenges, nutrition tips, and other exclusive content. Shaun believes this approach helps people develop a healthier relationship with their fitness goals. “It’s about finding a balance. Sure, a box of cookies won’t give you a six-pack, but you can still enjoy a cookie or two,” he says.
No matter what your goals are, Shaun T believes that resilience is the key to success. “No struggle is too hard to overcome. Sometimes, we face obstacles not just to survive but to show the world our best selves and become the best person we can be.” ■
